In fifteen weeks, I’ll be able to spend more of my time doing what I did on Sunday: biking at the St. Marks Refuge (SMR).
My husband and I used to walk the 12-mile loop, although for me anyway the last two miles were more hobbling than walking. These days neither of us can manage walking the 6-mile loop. Bad knees, bad back, less tolerance for heat and humidity. But we have bikes.
Here’s a few scenes from our Sunday excursion. We were blessed by the sight of a bald eagle. I really think the bald eagles at SMR are naturals for photo-ops. We were surrounded by natural beauty. SMR is a special place for us, and spending time there always lifts our spirits.
It was a beautiful day, even if it got a bit warm (85 degrees). The horseflies were out and about, but thanks to our bikes, we could outrun them … sort of. I had been wanting to bike SMR for a long time. We biked it once, a long time ago, and I always wanted to do it again. Now that I know I couldn’t complete a 6-mile loop much less a 12-mile loop with my arthritic knees, biking is the way to go.
I hope you enjoyed the trip. And I hope you are all well and safe and holding onto hope.

We walk 5-6 miles, but then we usually want a nap. It is an option. (Soon for you too!)

Ah, yes, a nap! I look forward to those. Sometimes on the weekend, I have no choice π Fatigue will suddenly overtake me and I have to lie down. At least it tends to happen after I’ve been physically active π

I used to bike 15-20 miles–but only in spin class!π€£ And, I’m not going inside a gym now. Thanks for taking us along on your bike trip. So beautiful!
(I bet I’ll be able to see the fireworks going off from here in fifteen weeks!) π

lol on the fireworks, Merril π You know, I’ve never been to a spin class, although I’ve used the various stationary and recumbent bikes at a gym. I enjoy biking but there’s few safe outdoor places to do it around here. i have fantasies about biking the Erie Canalway Trail in New York. It’s almost 300 miles … that’s why it’s a fantasy π

Thanks, Ally. It was a fun trip with lots of delights, but I’m really forward to some cooler temps, at least cool enough to slow down the biting insects π

Thanks, Marie, for the bike ride and a look at nature around you. I’m not even able to walk 1/2 mile while still in recovery from spine surgery a full 18 months ago (with minor complications slowing recovery down). I long to walk steadily again as walking has always been my favorite exercise. Until then, perhaps I’ll just tag along with you on your bike.

I love having you come along with me, Sherrey! I am so sorry to hear that you’re not able to walk very far. Walking is my favorite exercise too. it’s a must in my life, although I’m having to accept some limits. I hope you continue to recover and be walking in the near future.

Lovely photos! Sounds like a great trip. I recall seeing eagles in Arkansas at a big lake in the northern region somewhere. So beautiful!

[…] Area. In hindsight, I guess it was a kind of prep for the ride we’d take at St. Marks Refuge (15 Weeks and Counting #wfh #newchapter #nature). A prep that would make biking at St. Marks feel like we were riding on […]

Glorious photos! I wish the gardener would walk with me, but he is a race ahead by himself person. Hard to walk with him.

Greg would complain that I walk too fast, although I’m slower than I used to be π If I want to walk for exercise, I have to go by myself and I’ll usually do that in my neighborhood. But when we hit the trails, it’s great to amble as Greg calls it. Best way to be sure we see the bugs, butterflies, and birds. I’m so glad to see you’re well enough to start visiting again! Just don’t overdo it π
